The Civic Engagement Fellowship honors students at BCB who demonstrate dedication and exceptional contributions to civic engagement and community service. The Fellowship supports students who want to continue student-run projects aimed at having a positive social impact; who want to actively promote civic engagement and engaged citizenship; who want to connect to Berlin communities and make a difference in civic life.
BCB Civic Engagement Fellow 2024: Hammayl

BCB Civic Engagement Fellow 2024: Hammayl

Meet Hammayl Shammas, whose passion for intersectional feminism inspired the founding of the Bard Feminist Collective. The Collective addresses inconsistencies in Western feminism and supports feminist movements in the developing world.

“A fundamental tenet of our collective is to challenge sympathy-based activism and confront the ignorance often prevalent in discussions of feminism and gender-related issues, particularly those affecting less developed regions," says Hammayl.

With the support of the Civic Engagement Fellowship, she will continue to drive meaningful change this year, focusing on women’s mobility and promoting intersectionality by reforming feminist language to better suit unique contexts around the globe.

BCB Civic Engagement Fellow 2024: Tanishka

Meet Tanishka Murthy, an Economics and Politics student who leads EJAAD Berlin. EJAAD's main objectives are to foster social change for disadvantaged Afghan women and girls through supporting economic and educational initiatives, providing humanitarian aid, and promoting civic engagement. With her Indian roots, upbringing in Japan, and fluency in multiple languages, Tanishka shows that meaningful connections can be built across cultures, even without a direct cultural link. With the support of the Civic Engagement Fellowship, she is committed to continuing her impactful work and engaging more BCB students in its goals.

"I believe I have a responsibility to use the privilege I have for a cause that goes beyond myself."
