Visa and Work Permits after Graduation

Student residence permits expire at exmatriculation (students can wait to exmatriculate until the end of the semester at the end of June or can do it at graduation) -- even if their permit exceeds that date (you find the exact expiration date on your permit card!).
Graduating students need to have applied for the job seeker resident permit (or whatever they are transitioning to) before exmatriculation.

For more information regarding visa and work permits after graduation in Germany go directly to Residence Permit for Job-Seeking Qualified Skilled Workers from the Berlin Senate. There are different durations depending on if a student received a German or American degree and this also then dictates how many hours they can work -- see section b) and c) for the differences.

To schedule an appointment with the Consultation Service in the Berlin Immigration Office e-mail: [email protected]. Booking time slots early before your card expires is highly advised, since appointments take often times several months to get!
