Disability Intimacy by Alice Wong: Slow reading

The Disability Intimacy slow reading group has been rescheduled to Wednesday 30th of September, at 12:30-13:30 in Seminar Room 11 in K24. This session will be dedicated to disability justice and heartbreaks. Bring your food and listen to the Dreaming of Black Disability Doulas: An Imagining by feminist scholar, writer and activist Moya Bailey. The second essay we will read / listen to is To the You that Used to Be Home: An Anatomy of a Disabled Heartbreak by educator and community organizer Mia Mingus. She is known for her work on 'collective access'. Collective access emphasizes how disability interacts with other aspects of an individual's identities, making disability justice activism necessarily intertwined with anti-racist, feminist, reproductive justice, queer, and prison abolitionist activism.

Disability Intimacy is a book by Alice Wong, who was a renowned disability activist. This book is about all possible ways people with disabilities imagine and practice intimacy. It is a collection of personal stories, pictures, and poetry. We will read together some of the stories from the book. We will search for those words, expressions, thoughts and emotions that expand our imagination of what intimacy is and how it is practiced by disabled communities.

There will be 4 slow reading sessions in total.

At each session, we will slowly read and discuss one offering from the book. Vita will propose some alternative ways of reading as material and bodily practice. There will be an open space for your ideas on how to engage with the reading. Come as you are, no preparation is necessary. Come tired. Come curious. Come to read, to listen, to relax. Pop in and pop out just for one event as it suits you. Plain language copy of the book and print outs are available.

These slow reading sessions are part of the Disability Justice Programme planned by Vita Zelenska, Student Health and Disability Resources Manager, and Lauren Gaillard, Director of Equal Opportunity, Participation and Nondiscrimination.
