Yeh Freedom Life -- a film screening and discussion with director Priya Sen

Thursday, September 25, 2025
P98a Lecture Hall
7:00 pm – 9:00 pm CET/GMT+1
Filmed in the dense streets and neighbourhoods of Ambedkar Nagar in New Delhi, 'Yeh Freedom Life' (This Freedom Life) tries to keep up with its protagonists, as they maneuver erratic and unpredictable love. One of them works at a local beauty parlour, the other runs the family cigarette kiosk at a crowded intersection. They are surrounded by a cacophonous city; they are both in love with other women. The film stays with them and their desire for 'freedom lives', outside society and family's constant scrutiny and sanction. But this ‘freedom life’ also leaves them vulnerable to the precariousness of love, when it refuses such constraints.

Duration: 70min
Language: Hindi with English subtitles
Direction & Editing: Priya Sen
Cinematography: Ankur Ahuja

The film screening is part of Prof. Dr. Agata Lisiak's course PT160 Transnational Feminism and will be followed by a Q&A session with director Priya Sen.

Priya Sen is an artist and filmmaker with an embodied and eclectic practice with video and sound. Her work may be described as part keeping record, part poetry, part documentary, and part cinematic gesture. She received an MA from Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi, and an MFA in film and media arts from Temple University, Philadelphia. Most recently she was a Radcliffe Fellow at Harvard Radcliffe Institute and a Harvard Film Study Centre Fellow, 2023-24. Priya's work has screened at festivals and venues in India and globally including Forum Expanded Berlinale, Experimenta - Bangalore, BFI London Film Festival, Prismatic Ground, NYC, The 65th Flaherty Seminar, Kochi Biennale 2022, The Kitchen, NYC and M+ Museum Hong Kong among others. She is currently based in New Delhi.
