Bard College Berlin student Mala Emde is nominated for Best Female Lead at the 2025 Deutscher Filmpreis for her work in KÖLN 75

Mala Emde, a student at Bard College Berlin, was one of three nominees for "Beste weibliche Hauptrolle" (Best Female Lead) at the 2025 Deutscher Filmpreis, chosen by members of the German Film Academy. She was nominated for her work in the award-winning film KÖLN 75, which premiered at the 2025 Berlinale.

In KÖLN 75, based on a true story, Emde portrays the rebellious 18-year-old Vera Brandes who bravely reserves the Cologne Opera to bring American jazz musician Keith Jarrett to Cologne for a concert in January 1975 – and thus writes music history.

Brandes herself told Variety, "I loved it... Mala just plays it fantastically. I think she really got it. It brought tears to my eyes to see so many people being so dedicated and engaged in reliving this moment."
