BCB Dean and Professor of Literature Dr.
Catherine Toal published a review of the first scholarly study of the novelist Maggie O'Farrell in
The Irish Times on Saturday, June 8. The collection, edited by Elaine Canning, provides a comprehensive introduction to O'Farrell's work, with a special attention to her recent turn to historical fiction—with a literary motif—in two novels:
Hamnet (2020), which focuses on the wife of William Shakespeare, and The Marriage Portrait (2022), which deals with the subject of Browning's poem "My Last Duchess." O'Farrell has had a long and highly successful writing career, garnering bestseller status and prestigious literary awards. Canning's collection addresses all aspects of O'Farrell's oeuvre, providing historical context, linguistic analysis, a comprehensive bibliography, and a wide-ranging interview with its subject. The study was issued in the Bloomsbury Academic Contemporary Critical Perspectives series.
