Dr. Berit Ebert publishes chapter examining gender equality in international investment law

Dr. Berit Ebert contributed the chapter “International Investment Treaties and the Promotion of Gender Equality” to the recently published open-access volume Investment Law, Justice, and Sustainable Development, edited by Prof. Dr. Frank Emmert of Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law and Dr. Begaiym Esenkulova of the American University of Central Asia. The volume is part of the Global Higher Education for the 21st Century (GHEA21) Open Educational Resources initiative.

The book brings together contributions from scholars and practitioners around the world to examine contemporary questions of international investment law, investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS), justice, and sustainable development. Designed as a study and research resource, the volume addresses the opportunities and challenges presented by foreign direct investment. It considers how investment law can better balance investor protection with the economic, social, environmental, and human-rights interests of host states and their communities.

Ebert’s chapter contributes a gender perspective to the broader conversation about sustainable and responsible investment. She emphasises that gender concerns should form an integral part of international investment agreements if they are to foster investment decisions that are both sustainable and trustworthy. The chapter highlights the connections between gender equality, economic development, and the design of legal frameworks governing international investment.
