Dionysus and the Wisdom of Tragedy: Euripides’ The Bacchae
Thursday, December 7, 2023 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm CET/GMT+1Online (Zoom)
First performed in 405 B.C.E., Euripides’ The Bacchae is a tragedy in which one of the main characters is Dionysus, the god of theater. In many ways, the figure of Dionysus at the center of this tragedy is the source of its particular power and complexity. Interpreting the multi-dimensional role of Dionysus in this tragedy is crucial for approaching the way this work opens important questions about identity, nature and the politics of art.
