What Community Dance can Achieve - Looking at the Life and Work of Royston Maldoom

Online Lecture
7.30pm CET

In the second lecture of the series on Dance & Community Building - Utopian Practice in the 21st Century, choreographer Royston Maldoom, the godfather and pioneer of Community Dance, will talk about his work, his methods, and selected projects. From war torn Sarajevo to Addis Ababa, from slums in Peru to displaced people in Berlin, Maldoom has choreographed inside high security prisons, began a dance education program in Ethiopia, and choreographed for hundreds of youth in collaboration with major philharmonic orchestras in Europe. Maldoom has mentored and supported innumerable individual dance artists and projects around the world. His current focus is Palestine. After addressing his work, we’ll take off our shoes again and experience how he gets absolute novices—people who never heard of modern dance—to feel confident performing on stage in front of large audiences. Thousands of those whose lives he has touched over the decades—often coming from underprivileged, handicapped, outsider or fearful environments—are testimony to his statement: “You can change your life in a dance class.”

Moderated by: Jacalyn Carley, co-founder of the Tanzfabrik Berlin, choreographer, and author of  “A Handbook: Royston Maldoom: Community Dance—Everyone Can Dance!”
