Graduating student Salma Houmane receives the 2022 DAAD Award
Among Salma’s civic engagement projects has been her work in promoting German culture and education among high school students from Tunisia, her home country. Salma also tutors IB French in Oranienburg, which she describes as an amazing and eye-opening experience. In addition, she works with the organization Berliner Tafel e.V. that collects good quality food that would otherwise land in the garbage and distributes it for free to socially and economically disadvantaged people all over Berlin.
Together with a fellow BCB student from Syria who sought asylum in Germany, Salma is engaged in public policy work aimed at highlighting and improving the often dehumanizing conditions that refugees face upon arriving in the EU. They will be writing Amnesty International petitions and working on a podcast featuring interviews with men and women from different walks of life who speak about the impact of the refugee experience on the perception of their bodies.
Students are nominated for the DAAD Prize by members of the faculty. Previous recipients were Vala Schriefer (2021), Adam Hardaker (2020), Bíborka Béres (2019), and Margarethe Hattingh (2018).
