Yorgos Karagiannopoulos explains, “In this site-specific installation, painting, sculpture, video, sound, textile and mnemonic objects converge into a material collage that questions dominant forms of remembrance.”
The Korean character in the title of the exhibition, 집 (jip), translates to “house” or “home.” The English section of the title, “how quickly leaving had been and how slow returning is,” is twofold. It reflects the feeling shared amongst people who have left their homes or home countries and later return. It also references Gied’s family history: Her mother moved to Cologne from Korea as a young woman in the early 1970s to work as a nurse. Born in Germany, Gied herself lived in Korea until the age of eight, but only returned as an adult for the first time at age 28 as a DAAD scholarship holder. She considers the "in-between" nature of her background to be an enrichment to her life and art.
Gied is currently teaching the studio arts course Beginning Painting at Bard College Berlin, bringing her expertise and guidance to students.
