Guest faculty Fred Abrahams writes opinion piece in Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso Transeuropa about mass protests in Albania

Two luxury resorts being developed by Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump on the southern coast of Albania have sparked large-scale demonstrations to protest the environmental impact and lack of transparency around the project, and have expanded to target the government of Prime Minister Edi Rama, highlighting corruption, cronyism, and autocratic rule.

Guest faculty Fred Abrahams, author of the book Modern Albania: from Dictatorship to Democracy (NYU Press, 2015), traveled to Albania and wrote an opinion piece on this significant movement, dubbed the "Flamingo Revolution."

Abrahams interviewed local protestors and wrote of Prime Minister Rama, "image-making has become his trademark skill: constructing tall buildings that look grand from abroad and cast long shadows at home."
