Prof. Dr. Gale Raj presents on Malaysian semiconductor industry at the 7th Global Conference on Economic Geography in Massachusetts
The presentation is based on research Raj conducted on the industrial policies focused on foreign investments in the semiconductor industry in Malaysia and how they have been impacted by restructuring of global production networks in light of supply chain resiliency concerns and China-US tariff wars. Discussions focused on core-periphery structural dependency type relationships between semiconductor companies in Western Europe (core) and offshored factories in Malaysia (periphery), reproduced through global production networks, and the role of foreign technology, capital and knowledge driving industrial policies in Malaysia.
The presentation wa part of the three year research project on Global Production post Covid-19: Assessing the geographical restructuring of firms and industries in global production networks, funded by the German Research Fund (DFG).
