Ceasefire and beyond: What now for the Israel–Palestine Conflict?

Since March 18, the ceasefire agreement has collapsed. Together, our panelists will discuss the challenges to sustaining the ceasefire and advancing towards longer-term solutions.

On January 19, 2025, a ceasefire in Gaza came into effect, marking a tentative pause in 18 months of war that began with Hamas’s brutal terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, and was followed by a devastating Israeli incursion into Gaza, resulting in a massive loss of civilian lives. So far the ceasefire agreement remains precarious, given the lack of concrete peace-building mechanisms and, more recently, concerns over Trump’s abhorrent plan for the permanent displacement of Palestinians from Gaza.

To address these issues we invite you to a panel discussion with Alena Jabarine, a Palestinian-German journalist, and Nimrod Flaschenberg, a member of the Berlin-based organization Israelis for Peace. 

Together with our panelists, we will discuss the present realities Palestinians are facing in Gaza, in the West Bank, and inside Israel. We will ask what challenges stand in the way of sustaining the ceasefire agreement and advancing towards longer-term solutions. We will also examine the impact of the war on Palestinian and Israeli communities here in Germany, the growing concern over the rise of antisemitism, concerns over the narrowing of freedom of speech when it comes to criticism of Israel. 

This timely conversation aims to unpack the complexities of the ongoing conflict and assess what the future may hold for peace and security in the region.

Alena Isabelle Jabarine (born 1985 in Hamburg) is a journalist. She studied political science in Hamburg and international relations in Barcelona. Following an internship at NDR, she has been working as a freelance journalist since 2015, primarily for public broadcasters. Jabarine lived in Ramallah From 2020 to the end of 2022. Her book, Der letzte Himmel: Meine Suche nach Palästina, will be published this May by Ullstein Verlag.

Nimrod Flaschenberg (born 1990 in Tel Aviv) is an activist, writer, and analyst. He is co-founder of the Berlin-based advocacy group Israelis for Peace. Previously, he worked as a Knesset staffer and campaign manager for Hadash, a Jewish-Arab left-wing political party in Israel.
