The World’s Oldest Modern Democracy is in Need of Reform: Prof. Dr. Boris Vormann publishes The USA - a Liberal Democracy and its Anachronisms

Prof. Dr. Boris Vormann is the co-editor of a new special volume from Zeitschrift für Politik (ZfP) titled The USA - a Liberal Democracy and its Anachronisms. Vormann, a Bard College Berlin Professor of Politics and the Director of the Politics Concentration, worked as co-editor alongside Prof. Dr. Heike Paul, and both contributed to the book's introduction. 

The USA - a Liberal Democracy and its Anachronisms builds on Vormann’s work on the role of the state in globalization and urbanization processes; nations and nationalism; and the crisis of democracy. The volume explores the roots and foundations of American democracy, and attempts to straddle the contradictions in the American democratic system. Acknowledging the need for reform, the book takes a closer look into the crisis facing America today through criticism of the country’s political institutions, and its party and media landscape. The book provides well-argumented skepticism for American democracy, questions how it could change, and addresses proposals for reform. Such ideas have become exponentially valuable in this time when America continues to perpetuate injustice and face crises, especially in the wake of the January 6 insurrection. Exploring questions of American Federalism and its outdated normative ideals of social justice, The USA - a Liberal Democracy and its Anachronisms speaks to issues that require deep examination and critique, and provides new insights into the future of American democracy.
