Bard College Berlin co-hosts annual interdisciplinary conference of the Institute for Global Reconstitution; Professor of Politics Ewa Atanassow speaks on "Liberal Constitutionalism on Trial"
The conference explored the multiple crises – a "polycrisis" – threatening today’s world: the rise of aggressive militaristic states and right-wing populist parties, the catastrophic consequences of climate change, and an increasing vulnerability to fatal pandemics. Taking place at the intersection of political theory, the philosophy of nature, and policy analysis, the conference examined the potential of new beginnings arising from the polycrisis through political constitutionalism and nature politics.
On the second day of the conference, under the panel theme of The Limits of Liberalism, Bard College Berlin Professor of Politics Dr. Ewa Atanassow gave a talk on "Liberal Constitutionalism on Trial." Drawing on the work of Alexis de Tocqueville and Carl Schmitt, Atanassow argued that liberal democracy’s current crisis is not in itself new. Though triggered by specific 21st century conditions and the failures of the liberal order itself, this crisis reflects tensions and dilemmas that are constitutive of modern society.
Other panel themes included “Constituent Power Beyond Nation-States,” “War and Peace,” “Politics of Environmental Transformation,” and “Democracy and Constitutional Processes in Eastern and Southern Europe.”
