Dr. Ajla Škrbić hosted students from Tennessee to discuss gender-based violence
The six students were on a short visit to Berlin as part of Esquivel’s Introduction to Women's and Gender Studies course, and expressed a desire to learn more about Škrbić’s work at the intersection of gender, law, and armed conflict.
The two-hour visit consisted of a lecture and an in-depth Q&A session. Topics discussed included the importance of intersectionality and how conflicts affect women of different socioeconomic classes, as well as specific conflicts in the world. Students asked about recent reports on the alleged sexual violence perpetrated by Russian soldiers on men in occupied areas of Ukraine, and how sexual violence as a weapon of war impacts different genders. Students also inquired about how the roles of toxic masculinity, female genital mutilation, and public representations of sex impact how conflict and sexual violence play out globally.
Škrbić taught the course Sexual Violence, Gender and War at Bard College Berlin last semester. She works at the Technische Universität Dresden and is a certified lecturer on international law for the Civil Service Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
