Nil Mutluer - "Life and Death Before and During the AKP Era"

Bard College Berlin Lecture Hall
On Wednesday, 4 April, Nil Mutluer, Philip Schwartz Fellow in the Institute of Social Sciences at Humboldt-Universität, will speak to a joint session of Agata Lisiak's Migration, Gender, and Nationalism and Michael Weinman's Nationalismcourses.
Her presentation, entitled: "Life and Death Before and During the AKP Era: Gender, Nationalism and Secularism/Religion Tension in Turkey," addresses the intersection of two ongoing conflicts in Turkey, before and during the rise of Erdogan's AKP Party. First, that between the Turkish state and the Kurdish minorities in Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran; second, that surrounding the role and place of women in Turkish society, with reference to the struggle between Kemalist and Islamic politics in Turkish democracy.
