Chatbots are theater machines: they engage in lively dialogues, take on roles, and express and evoke emotions. The piece Chatbot Challenge, that premiered in October 2024 at HAU Berlin, explores the societal effects of Artificial Intelligence by examining its theatrical qualities. In the show, Tecklenburg and Christiane Kühl perform on stage with AI systems and the creative coder Manus Nijhoff. By blurring the line between human and machine-generated performance, they ask the questions: How much theater is in AI, and how much AI-theater have we already internalized?
