Back to the Future: Algorithms, Elites & Bias in 21st Century Start-Ups

Bard College Berlin - Seminar Room 11, Kuckhoffstr. 24, 13156 Berlin Admission free

A talk by Dr. Nakeema Stefflbauer

Workforce entry in the 20th century relied heavily on human connections, personal favoritism and/or a distinguished academic record. In the 21st century, widespread automation via technology has led to increased organizational reliance on human bias, rather than more objective job evaluation. This talk examines how technology access, around-the-clock availability, and the rise of worker’s “personal brand” has reinforced traditional social inequalities in the modern start-up setting.

Dr. Nakeema Stefflbauer is a Senior Digitalisation Program Manager at ERGO Digital IT and the founder of FrauenLoop gUG, a Berlin non-profit organisation that trains resident, refugee and immigrant women for careers in the technology field. Since 2000, she has led eLearning, eCommerce, mobile messaging and B2B software development teams with Fortune 500 and DAX companies in the USA, Canada, and in Germany.

The talk is organized in the frame of the Internship Course led by Agata Lisiak and Florian Duijsens

This event takes place in the frame of and with support from the Mellon-funded Consortium on Forced Migration, Displacement, and Education
