In particular, Goldstein and Balsters commemorate the Berlin resistance fighter Annedore Leber, the widow of Julius Leber, an SPD politician and resistance fighter who was executed by the National Socialists. Together with Willy Brandt, Annedore Leber published literature on the German resistance in the 1950s. In the exhibition, the artists use staged photography, collage, installation, and video to show the possibilities of female resistance: a tribute to all women who fought without weapons in various roles, made connections, supported the strategy, and secured daily life.
Goldstein lives and works in Berlin, and is teaching the course “The Political Image” this semester at Bard College Berlin, a practicing arts photography course that engages with the political meaning of photography. She has been working as an artist for the past 15 years with her main mediums being photography and collage. Two of her most prominent themes are feminism and female histories. Goldstein moves freely in the realms of self-documentary, narrative portraits, and dealing with archives, and also works with installation and video. Her work has been exhibited in various countries, most recently in France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Germany. She has been teaching photography since 2010.
There will be a guided tour of the exhibition on Thursday, September 5 at 6:00pm at the Willy-Brandt-Haus with Goldstein, Balsters, and curator Conny Becker.
