Prof. Dr. Laura Scuriatti serves as dramaturg for world premiere of Mina Loy's feminist plays
Mina Loy (1882-1966) was a poet, artist, feminist, and designer, and is increasingly recognized as part of the expanded modernist canon due to her experimental poetics and transmedial visual artworks, which she developed in dialogue with a number of avant-garde groups such as Futurism, dada, and Surrealism.
The University of Michigan is staging the world premiere of Loy's satirical plays, which feature the themes of Futurism and the modernist art scene. Scuriatti has served as dramaturg on the team of artists, performers, and scholars who made the event possible. Led by Alison Dobbins, Project Director and Professor of Integrated Performance Media Design in the Department of Theatre at MSU, this project is a collaborative effort by a team of women leaders across various artistic disciplines, including performance art, English, literature, music composition, and design, who all share a commitment to multidisciplinary, feminist approaches in both scholarship and creative endeavors.
With performances on December 7 and 8 at the Michigan State University Broad Art Museum and the University of Michigan-Flint North Bank Dance Studio, the world premiere is free and open to the public.
The aim of the staging, in the words of Dobbins, is to “challenge toxic masculinity stereotypes with a blend of humor, encouraging introspection for those involved... Mina Loy’s lasting influence from the 19th century remains a cornerstone of the 21st-century modernist literature movement, and I find immense pride in employing an interdisciplinary approach to bring her ideas to life.”
Scuriatti is a leading expert on Mina Loy, having authored the 2019 book Mina Loy's Critical Modernism and published numerous articles on the topic. She has also spoken at multiple international conferences and literary festivals about Loy’s works.
