Professor of Politics Dr. Ewa Atanassow presented at a conference on ​"Democracy in Crisis: Tocqueville's Theory of Democracy and Its Relevance in the Age of (Global) De-Democratization​" held at the Universität Regensburg​ on May 28-30​. The conference reexamined central elements of Alexis de Tocqueville​'s ground-breaking theory of democracy ​and brings them to bear on contemporary challenges. Atanassow's presentation "Democracy Dilemma's: Tocqueville on Populism" revisited Tocqueville's account of popular sovereignty and nationhood and its relevance for understanding current populist movements.
