Seraphine Maerz received her PhD in Political Science from the Central European University, Budapest, in December 2017. She is currently a postdoctoral research associate at the Department of Political Science of the University of Freiburg and will join Bard College Berlin for the next academic year (2018/2019). Seraphine completed a Master’s degree in Central Asian Studies (HU Berlin) and a Master’s degree in European Studies and Political Science (Viadrina, Frankfurt/Oder). Beside various work experience and a short research stay at UC Berkeley, she conducted several months of fieldwork in Central Asia.

Seraphine’s research concentrates on the survival strategies of authoritarian regimes in Central Asia and beyond. She is particularly interested in how autocratic leaders use the Internet to justify and stabilize their rule. She is trained in qualitative and quantitative methods and is currently working with set-theoretic approaches, quantitative text analysis, and other computational methods.
